Sarah Orne Jewett

Sarah Orne Jewett was born in 1849 in Maine, a state in north-western America. Her love of the countryside grew as she had to take long walks as a child to improve her health. She lived a quiet life and never married, although her short stories and novels about country life made her well-known. She died in 1909.
