D. H. Lawrence
D. H. Lawrence was born in 1885 in an industrial town in England. His father was a miner who couldn’t read or write comfortably, but the son became one of the most important writers in English, most famously of novels.
D. H. Lawrence trained to be a teacher but soon began writing full-time. Many people liked his novels but some said they were dirty because they talked about sex very openly. Lawrence also supported Germany during the First World War and the government thought he was a spy. He travelled both for his health – he had tuberculosis – and to escape negative opinion in England. Many of his novels happen in the countries he visited, like Mexico and Australia. Lawrence died, a very important English writer but with little money, in 1930.
